Rivers Government Names Stadium, Road After Ex-Head Of State Gowon


Rivers State government has renamed the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, as Yakubu Gowon Stadium in honour of the former Head of State who created the state in 1967. In the same vein, the Governor Nyesom Wike administration also renamed the Old Aba Road in the state capital as the Yakubu Gowon Road.



This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the special assistant to the governor on electronic media, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu. It will be recalled that Governor Wike had, during a meeting with the former head of state and officials of the Nigeria Prays, declared that the state government would immortalise him for his role in the creation of Rivers State. According to the governor, Gowon, apart from creating the state, also served as a symbol of national unity. Daily Independent.
