PDP chieftain beaten to stupor in Benue

There was confusion on Sunday during a thanksgiving service in the Kastina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State when angry supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party stripped a chieftain of the party naked.

His offence: he distributed handbills of Samuel Ortom, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

The occasion was the birthday celebration and thanksgiving service organised by the Special Adviser to Governor Gabriel Suswan on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Solomon Womb, to mark his 50th birthday.  The PDP chieftain, who was beaten to stupor before being stripped, was identified as Akor Ikyegh, a youth leader in the Ushongo Local Government Area of the state.

Ikyegh is a personal aide to Prof. Daniel Iornem, a member of the Suswam Campaign Organisation, who defected to PDP after years of having been in opposition politics.

Trouble started at the venue of the birthday celebration when a teenager was caught in the arena by PDP supporters, distributing handbills with Ortom’s message titled, “Rotation of governorship position among Benue churches: The time for the Pentecostal.”

Angered by the situation, the party supporters beat the distributor of the handbill mercilessly before he revealed that it was Akor, the PDP chieftain who was dressed in a PDP attire that sent him.

Confusion erupted in the place when the visibly infuriated party supporters held him, beat him to stupor before finally stripping him naked.

One of the party supporters pulled a gun and was about to shoot when the police and men of the vigilante group quickly intervened and whisked the man away in a patrol vehicle.

I was in a cage for 16 good years –President Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday looked back at his 16 years in public service and concluded that he was “in a cage” during the period.

gej

But he was quick to admit that he had yet to see anybody luckier than he had been. Jonathan spoke while receiving residents of the Federal Capital Territory who were led by Vice President Namadi Sambo to pay him Easter homage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said,

“For me as an individual, this Easter concides with the time I am leaving(office) but I always say that I am one of the luckiest Nigerians. I have yet to see somebody luckier than me.

“I have been in government for 16 years beginning from 1999. Not in government as a parliamentarian because if you are a Senator or House of Representatives member, you take care of yourself, you live in your own house.

“I was in a cage, being taken care of by government. From May 29, 1999 to date; 16 good years. I think it is enough and I am happy.

“Please help me to thank God for that. I will continue to thank Nigerians for giving me that privilege. I became a deputy governor because Bayelsans voted for me and my governor then (Diepreye Alamieyeseigha). I became a Vice-President because Nigerians voted for (Umaru)Yar’Adua and myself.

“I continued in 2011 because Nigerians voted for me and Namadi Sambo. I have to thank all Nigerians. Wherever I will be, I will remain grateful to this great country. Today is a glorious day for me.”

Jonathan said Nigerians should be ready to make sacrifices for the survival of the government   at every given time. He said during his days as deputy governor, he kept telling people that what he needed was patriotism and not loyalty. The President cited the examples of soldiers and policemen who, according to him, are dying daily in the fight against Boko Haram in order for others to live.

He added,

“So as a people, as a government, what I   believe we should always ask is: ‘What sacrifice   are we making?

“Now, it is not about supporting Jonathan or his government. Now, Buhari is coming on board; it is not about supporting Buhari or his government but the sacrifice   we are willing to make for government and for the nation?

“If you are a businessman and you say you are supporting government but you don’t pay tax, how then do you expect that government to survive?

“While in Bayelsa State as a deputy governor, people used to come to me to say ‘I’m loyal;’ but I always tell them   to   say that   they are patriotic to the country.

“To me, whenever I travel out of the country and see things work, I tell myself that those things didn’t fall down like manna; people made sacrifices. Therefore,   people in Nigeria must also be ready to make   sacrifice.

“Whoever becomes President is immaterial so long as the citizens are happy: our children go to school, the sick   go to good hospital and of course, the economy is working. But for them to take place, people must make the required sacrifices.

“In the ECOWAS sub-region for example, Nigeria has the lowest rate of Value Added Tax which is five per cent. Other countries in the region pay up to 12 per cent.

“If for instance, Buhari decides to increase VAT from five to 10 per cent, will Nigerians support him? That is sacrifice and we must make sacrifice.  “Nation building depends on   sacrifice by individuals and patriotism.

“We are talking about Boko Haram or terror, soldiers are dying so that others can   live, policemen are dying while protecting us. These people are making sacrifices. As individuals we don’t need to die but there   roles we need to play and one of them is to make   sacrifice.”

Jonathan cited the case of China, saying when its economy was threatened, the citizens locked up themselves for a period of time. He recalled that by the time they opened their doors, the country   became a threat to the biggest economies. The President wondered if Nigerians were ready for that kind of sacrifice which, according to him, is one of the key lessons of Easter.

Sambo, in his remarks, thanked Jonathan for what he described as achievements. The Vice President said   by accepting defeat in the last elections, Jonathan had saved the country and made it a pride of Africa and a global star.

“For your contributions and actions, your name will forever be in gold in the history of the world ,” Sambo said.

The Vice President said he was proud to remain the President’s deputy, friend and brother. He said since the five years he spent with the President were enough to obtain first and second degrees in a university, he had obtained Ph.D under Jonathan’s tutelage.

“I will forever be loyal to you. We are members of one family. We are very proud of you. All Nigerians appreciate the strong foundation you have put in place,” he added.

A giant Easter greeting card was presented to the President during the event that was attended by the deputy governor of Sokoto State, Muktar Shagari; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan; and the Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Revd. Nicholas Okoh.

The Head of Service, Danladi Kifasi; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Muhammed; the Minister of State, FCT, Olajumoke Akinjide; and the Chief Imam of Abuja, Muhammed Musa were in the delegation.

Nigerians’ll look for Jonathan

– President’s chaplain

Meanwhile, the Chaplain to the President, Ven. Obioma Onwuzurumba, has said that Nigerians would still look for Jonathan.

He said this while delivering a sermon titled “The Lord is risen indeed” during the Easter Sunday service held at the Aso Villa Chapel.

The cleric likened Jonathan to Jesus Christ whose disciples, he said, were not even convinced that he was the messiah and that he would resurrect.

The clergyman said, “This Jonathan they did not want, they will look for him. This Jonathan they despised, they will look for him. They will seek his advice. He is not Jesus but he is like Jesus. I am not here to praise him.

“The disciples did not have the confidence that Jesus who did many things in their lives and that of the people was the messiah and if indeed he would resurrect again.”

Onwuzurumba argued that irrespective of what anybody would say, Jesus Christ resurrected and is alive.

The first lesson of the service was read by the chaplain’s wife from Psalm 16:1 to the end while the second lesson taken from Luke 24:13-35. It was   read by the Senator representing FCT, Philip Aduda.

It service which also featured special renditions and special prayers was not attended by Jonathan’s wife, Patience and his mother, Eunice.

Naira reacts to president-elect Buhari, set to rise further against the dollar this week

The naira will rise further against the dollar on the parallel market this week, analysts and foreign exchange dealers have predicted.

naira

They argued that the peaceful outcome of the presidential election and the hard stance of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, against corruption and economic leakages had boosted investor confidence in the economy.  The naira, which fell to a record high of 228 against the greenback before the election, rose to 210 on Friday.

However, the local currency traded within the 199-199.50 band on the official interbank market, where it has been stuck since February, after the Central Bank of Nigeria pegged the rate.

The Acting President, Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, told our correspondent he expected the local currency to rise further this week and beyond.

Gwadabe, who said the naira had firmed to 204 against the dollar on Thursday, believe the trend would continue this week, adding that “the naira may appreciate to something below 197 currently at the interbank market.”

Foreign exchange dealers said the demand for dollar had reduced compared to what happened before the presidential election.

A currency analyst at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ezun, had said the market was trading around the general elections and Buhari’s person.

He had said, “The market has been trading around sentiments and emotions, this is why the naira is appreciating; nothing has really changed in the fundamentals. There was high demand for the dollar before the election because some people predicted post-election violence. Now, the game is over and there is no violence. So, the demand for the greenback is abating.

“The market is also trading around the sentiment that Buhari will fight corruption, strengthen institutions and eliminate wastages. But after his inauguration, the market will trade around the fundamentals like the oil price, external reserves and others.”

In a sign of relief, individuals who had stockpiled dollars to hedge against political risk fearing the election could be marred by violence, were exchanging their funds for the naira, Reuters reported.

“We are not going to see much of movement in the pricing of the naira at the interbank market until the central bank reviews the present measure which has stagnated the rate,” a dealer said.

The naira-dollar exchange rate has yet to witness any change at the interbank market.

According to Reuters, the Kenyan shilling is expected to weaken, hurt by negative sentiment after a deadly attack by al Shaabab near the frontier with Somalia threatened its tourism fortunes.

The shilling has lost ground steadily since last year, partly due to a downturn in tourism following attacks by al Shabaab militants. Tourists are a leading source of hard currencies for East Africa’s biggest economy.

The shilling could trade between 92.50-93.20 to the dollar, with a move beyond 93 likely triggering intervention from the central bank, National Bank of Kenya trader, Chris Muiga, said.

Traders said a government bond could lend support to the shilling. Kenya’s central bank has invited bids for a 12-year infrastructure bond worth 25 billion shillings ($270m).

Ghana’s cedi could be buoyed by demand from businesses looking to settle domestic quarterly bills.

The West African currency has weakened by about 11 per cent since January, but looks set to reverse some of those losses, partly helped by a $940m International Monetary Fund aid deal this month that is expected to unlock additional offshore inflows.

“Liquidity has been weak on the local market … and this is likely to hold the dollar/cedi at current levels next week,” Barclays Bank analyst, Michael Akpakli, said.

The outlook points to a firmer Zambian kwacha this week, after the central bank hiked the amount of money commercial banks should deposit with the regulator and as the government plans to resolve a mining tax row with foreign investors.

The Bank of Zambia will raise the statutory reserve ratio to 18 per cent from 14 per cent on Wednesday.

“The increase will reduce liquidity and that should render support to the kwacha,” analyst Maambo Hamaundu told Reuters.

President Edgar Lungu last month directed the finance and mining ministers to adjust royalties on mining firms by April 8, saying the copper-producer could consider temporarily reverting to the less punitive tax regime which was in place in 2014.

Traders predicted a stable shilling on tightening liquidity but some investors were concerned about the impact of a planned increase in government spending.

The Ugandan government is planning to increase spending before the 2016 elections, although the central Bank of Uganda has vowed to use its key interest rate to keep inflation in check.

The shilling traded at 3,000/3,016, weaker than 2,975/2,985 a week ago.

“Liquidity is getting tighter in the market, we see this tightening slowing any weakening of the unit (shilling),” a trader at Bank of Africa, Ahmed Kalule, said.

Integrity not enough to run government.. fight corruption, Bakare tells Buhari

The General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, on Sunday in Lagos cautioned the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, against appointing persons with questionable character into his government.  Some of these people, the cleric said, were among those who facilitated Buhari’s success on March 28.

tunde_bakare

Bakare, who was the running mate to Buhari in the 2011 Presidential election on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, said this at the 26th anniversary of his church. He delivered a message titled, ‘Democracy audit: chances, choices and consequences.’

The 60 year-old pastor urged Buhari to start the fight against corruption from his circle and lay a good example, saying change cannot be achieved if these were not done.

He said, “I congratulate Nigerians; we have chosen a man of integrity as our President. But integrity is not enough to run a government.

“May the good Lord surround the President-elect with men and women of goodwill, great intellectual capacity, competence and character to help restore our wasted years.

“I pray sincerely that not all those who facilitated his winning the election will be among those who run the government. I did say before the election that I trust the person of General Buhari but not all those around him.

“I mean every word of it because many of them are nothing but Ali Baba and 40 thieves. And if these are the same who would go into government, you can’t fight evil with evil. You can as well kiss the anti-corruption stance of Mr. President-elect goodbye.”

Bakare prayed for Buhari to have the needed wisdom and strength, noting that people were already submitting applications to him to serve in the incoming administration.

“You don’t know how many applications are in my phone. I am not the Vice-President; I am not looking for a job. They said ‘we know General Buhari listens to you; if I cannot get Minister of Works, maybe I will get Minister of Aviation’.

“The vultures are now going round and round. If he does not have quality people around him, then they will put round pegs in square holes and within two years, we are back to square one.”

The cleric saluted INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega for his leadership and “comportment in the face of grave accusation and provocation.”

He also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat, noting that he had written his name in gold.

Meanwhile, a former Chaplain of Aso Villa during the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Reverend William Okoye, has called on Buhari to reduce the cost of governance by reducing the number of political offices in the country.

Why Jonathan lost to Buhari – Emire Sanusi

Previous Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the current Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, says President Goodluck Jonathan lost due to the disposition of voters which was controlled by the financial conditions and level of neediness the nation over.

sanusi_emir

Sanusi, who is currently known as Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, said this amid a meeting with our reporter on Saturday.

He said the voting showed that areas which had a high rate of poverty felt neglected by the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government over the years. Sanusi said the presidential poll results showed that the figures of the PDP in presidential elections from 1999 had continued to dwindle significantly.

The monarch said the PDP got fewer votes in 2007, less in 2011 and then fewer votes in 2015 causing the ruling party to finally lose to the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress.

He said,

“I think in 2011, it was very clear that Jonathan had lost many states in the North that had previously been won by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. And it was clear that there was a general sense by people of the Federal Government not investing in the areas where there is a high level of poverty.

“I believe more and more of those states began to feel that sense of not feeling the federal presence and not feeling the impact of democracy in their pockets and I think it is extremely important for people to connect with the government and when you have such conditions after 16 years of democracy, it was natural that people would want to have a change and I think this is basically what has happened.

“I don’t think it is something about an individual, I think it is something that has been going on for a number of years and you could see the states won by the PDP in 1999 and what they won in 2003, what they won in 2007, 2011 and you would begin to see the changes in the way Nigerians were responding so it was a matter of time.”

Sanusi, however, commended Jonathan, the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari; and the Independent National Electoral Commission for the conduct and atmosphere of the election. He said change of leadership was good for democracy as it encouraged healthy competition. He said it was the trend in democracies across the world.

“I think it is good for the country that you have different parties winning and if the APC performs, they get another term and if they don’t, they get voted out after four years and it is extremely important that this happens so let us not see it in terms of somebody losing,” he said.

Sanusi also urged Buhari not to focus solely on corruption but on other areas that required urgent government attention such as education, decaying infrastructure, diversifying the economy and fixing power.

President-elect Buhari: ‘We feared Jonathan would not accept defeat’ - APC

The APC said when they figured out they’d won the race, they expected that Pres. Jonathan would dismiss the outcome and invent a military mediation to prevent Buhari from being president however were surprised when, not just did Pres. Jonathan concede defeat, however called Buhari to salute him.
gej

This was something the APC didn’t expect and would be always be grateful to Jonathan for…

The Director, Media and Publicity Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign Organization, Mallam Garba Shehu, conversed with

Vanguard about APC’s surprise on GEJ’s phenomenal move…

“I can say that the President acted with grace. He surprised us because we never expected that they would accept defeat. In fact, the sense everyone had was that they probably had plan A, B, C or D. And in any case, with the kind of thing that Mr. Orubebe did at the collation center, you knew that even when the President had grace, given the chance with the community of people around him, they could have threatened this democracy.

“Look, I have been involved in presidential campaigns about three or four times in the past, the difference is that this is the most fearful campaign that I have ever experienced. This is the most life threatening campaign because we were dealing with opponents we thought would stop at nothing because they were throwing everything into it.

So, we were not taking anything for granted. It affected our lives. Would you see me in a night club? You couldn’t risk it because you didn’t even know who was trailing you. And it came as a huge relief.

“Again, we were getting security reports from our own sources. Until the President said ‘I concede’ and congratulated Buhari, we felt every minute that something wrong would happen. There was a clear and discernible threat to democracy as a system of government.

“Look, everyone felt concerned because, what if, God forbid, he declared a coup? These scenarios had been laid before Nigerians. Mr. Okupe, the Special Adviser to the President, was he not on Youtube, recorded on video, saying that Buhari will never become President? What do you take that for? It means that Buhari would win and they will take it away from him.

“This careless talk, arrogant display of power, it had come from the Villa. Many sources with linkages to power: Asari-Dokubo, Chief E.K. Clark and all of them, were they not sounding words to the President? They had said it that they would take away their part of the country from Nigeria if Buhari won.

“But for the President to have come and say ‘I accept defeat as the leader of the country’; that had an effect of really calming things down. And that’s why, whether they like it or not, President Jonathan has written his name in gold in so far as this is concerned.” Shehu said.

He then assured that the Buhari would not avenge the attacks on his person by the allies of Jonathan, saying there was enough work to do to meet the aspirations of Nigerians than pursuing mundane things.

I am not a miracle worker, Do not expect miracles - Buhari Changes Tone

President elect, Muhmmadu Buhari, has requested that Nigerians not to expect him to perform marvels once he assumes office come May 29th.
buhari

Gen Buhari said this while talking on the war against Boko Haram in a meeting with BBC. As indicated by Buhari, the triumph against the terrorist organization members would not be promptly accomplished once he gets into power  however said with collaboration from Neighboring nations and the dedication of the military, the war would be won in a short time.

“For five, six years, the Nigerian enforcement law agencies, including the military, couldn’t secure 14 Local Governments. How can I promise miracles when I come? But with the cooperation of our neighbours Cameroon, Chad, Niger and the international community, and the commitment we are going to get from the military, I think it will take us a much shorter time to deal with it”, he said.

I told Jonathan he would lose -– TB Joshua

By Ihechukwu Njoku

Controversial cleric of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, T.B. Joshua, on Sunday said he told the outgoing Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, that he would lose last week’s presidential election.
tb

Mr. Joshua said he sent his message to the President several week before the election. “I want to use this moment to congratulate Nigerians in our midst here,” Mr. Joshua began in a message to his multi-national congregation, televised live via his Christian network Emmanuel TV.

Alluding to his prediction a week to the election that the dark cloud he saw covering Nigeria was lifting, he said that a bloody ‘war’ would have ensued if not for the prompt concession of power by President Jonathan.  “Look, Nigeria wanted change – everyone was yearning for change. An attempt to stop change leads to war, to a bloodbath… If Nigeria knows what we have overcome, we would dance,” Mr. Joshua said.

Mr. Joshua praised Mr. Jonathan’s tenure insisting that he had served his nation well despite the immense security challenges.

“I really want to salute President Jonathan. The President has served; he has done his best. It was just the season of crisis – and unfortunately he found himself at the lead in the season of crisis ,” he said.

The cleric said ‘God’ spoke to him with a message for Mr. Jonathan several weeks before the general elections.

He said God told him -“This message should be delivered to your president, that whatever the outcome of this election, his regime has come to an end. He should accept to save the lives of millions,” he told the congregation.  Mr. Joshua claimed he called Mr. Jonathan by phone, adding that he had previously shared with him many revelations about Nigeria which eventually came to pass.  Insisting the seriousness of the revelation was such that it had to be relayed personally so as not affect votes, Mr. Joshua said Mr. Jonathan promptly sent a close aide to meet the cleric.

After the presidential aide had worshipped at his church during a Sunday service, Mr. Joshua said he met him and relayed the revelation that Mr. Jonathan’s regime had come to an end. “Soft landing – that is the language I sent to the president,” he told attendees.

Mr. Joshua described President Jonathan as a man who ‘has a heart for God’, revealing that he even spoke with the Nigerian president shortly before his historic concession call to President-elect Mr. Buhari.

“I said to him, ‘Your Excellency – all you need to say is thank You, Jesus, even when it seems there is nothing to be thankful for. He said, ‘Thank you, man of God’. Before I knew it, I saw the news on CNN that he had congratulated his opponent ,” Mr. Joshua said.

He prayed that people from the ‘South-South’ region in Nigeria where President Jonathan hails from would understand that ‘their son has become a hero’, adding that his actions prove the region is after a united Nigeria.

Mr. Joshua reminded his congregants that he had given a similar message in 2010 to Laurent Gbagbo, the former President of Ivory Coast.

“In a vision, I saw crisis – thousands of people being killed in Ivory Coast – just because of the outcome of the election,” he said to congregants.

After sending the message across to the then Ivorian leader, a delegation of government figures and presidential aides was dispatched to Nigeria.

“I told them that whatever the outcome of the election – whether the popular or unpopular voice of people – our President should concede. His regime has come to an end,” Joshua reminisced.

According to the cleric, Mr. Gbagbo had personally called him regarding the prediction, looking for an avenue to avert it and inviting him to Ivory Coast. Joshua insisted that nothing more could be done.  When Mr. Gbagbo refused to concede power to Alassane Ouattara in the controversial 2010 elections, a bloody onslaught ensued leading to the deaths of thousands and his eventual incarceration and public disgrace.

Mr. Joshua also told his faithful how he had personally warned MKO Abiola that God was not backing his presidency in the ill-fated Nigerian elections of 1993 despite overwhelming public support in his favour.

He further recalled how, as a young man, he met the former Governor of Lagos State, Lateef Jakande, and told him that his beloved daughter was close to the grave. Both revelations came to pass, he said.  The cleric added that his prophetic ministry is the reason he does not take sides in politics. “That is why I don’t belong to any party. All the parties are my own. I love everyone. If I belong to this party and the message of God is now against that party, how will I present it – when no one knows the mind of God? It is better I am free to deliver God’s message.”

He said that material gain was not his mission and that no exchange of money can be involved when it comes to spiritual matters such as prophecy.

“I am a material to be used that will not cost you any money. I am afraid to collect money from you because if I collect it, it will affect the gift and grace of God in my life.”

Mr. Joshua prayed for the new government to be led by the All Progressives Congress. “Join me to pray for the new government, headed by President-Elect Buhari. Ask God to give our President a hearing heart – a heart that will listen to what the public is saying and want to know God’s opinion,” he said.

Ex-Edo gov candidate, Airhiavbere, defects to APC

A former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic ‎Party in the November, 2012 governorship election in Edo State, Maj. Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (retd.), has defected to the All Progressives Congress.
pdp_apc

Airhiavbere, whose defection came eight days after the 2015 presidential election, where the standard bearer of the APC, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), was declared winner, was the National Coordinator of the Goodluck to Goodluck 2015 support group.   The former PDP chief was received by the State Chairman of the APC, Mr. Anselm Ojezua, and the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Sunday, at an event held at Garrick Memorial College, in Benin, the state capital.

Airhiavbere explained that his decision to dump the PDP was based on the need for the state to “continue to enjoy the benefits” of the APC at the federal level. While pledging his support for the state government, he expressed the hope that the APC would deliver on all its campaign promises to Edo, which, he said, was yearning for federal projects such as the Gelegele Seaport and the rapid completion of the dualisation of the Lokoja-Benin road.

He said,
“I have decided to join the team of change that has come to the nation in the last election of the March 28, 2015, so that Edo State will continue to enjoy the benefits of the party at the centre.

“Any politician, who means well for this state will ground their arms of hate and join the change train of the APC government, ably led His Excellently, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole.”

‎Welcoming the defector and his supporters, Ojezua described Airhiavbere’s move as a setback, which would be difficult for the opposition party to overcome prior to Saturday’s House of Assembly’s election in the state.

While noting that the APC was open to more defectors, the state chairman assured the people that the party’s policy would apply to all without discrimination.

Voting for PDP disastrous – Osun APC

The All Progressives Congress has engaged the populace of Osun State not to permit any applicant of the Peoples Democratic Party to win the race into the 26 seats in the State House of Assembly.

 apc_flag

The Director of Publicity of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said this in an announcement he made accessible to a reporter in Osogbo on Sunday.

He guaranteed that the Federal Government drove by President Goodluck Jonathan kept Osun State from stores, expressing that if any individual from the PDP was voted into the Assembly, such would be out to frustrate the organization of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The statement read,
“The  state will be at risk of halting the remarkable development it has experienced in the last four years, if it allowed any candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party to become a member of the State House of Assembly.

“Any PDP candidate in the House of Assembly therefore will have only one mission – to frustrate and stall whatever project Ogbeni plans to implement for the benefit of the people of the state.

“PDP had been boasting that it would reverse all the gains the people of this state have made within the last four years under APC governance, if it won the governorship election.

“Then they resorted to Federal might to starve the state of funds, to frustrate a lot of projects which were on-going. But God, in His absolute mercy, used the Nigerian people to vote out the Goodluck Jonathan-led PDP government.

“Now, with Buhari and the APC set to take power in Abuja, Osun’s fortune will ‎definitely change for the better. To then become careless and allow any PDP candidate into the state House of Assembly will amount to ingratitude to God, and inadvertent choice to jeopardise the future of the state,” the APC declared.

Oritsejafor’s wife lied, says Borno pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa

Borno based Pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, said on Sunday that the wife of Christian Association of Nigeria President, Pastor Ayo Oristejafo, lied against him that he had beseeched her spouse over the charged N7bn pay off gathered from President Goodluck Jonathan in ahead of the presidential decision in the nation.

Musa-Dikwa had  accused the CAN leadership of collecting N7bn from Jonathan to campaign against the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Maj-Gen.Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), in the run-off to the presidential contest.  The cleric told one of our correspondents on the telephone in Kaduna that he had  not set his eyes on the CAN president for over a year now, let alone seeing him to beg as claimed by Oritsejafor’s wife.

The pastor called on Oritsejafo  and his cabinet to repent, urging the “real” men of God in the country to dissolve the current leadership of the Ayo Oritsejafor-led CAN before it was too late. He noted that he was not surprised  at the current antics by the wife of the CAN leader to blackmail him  as other means to armtwist him to meet the CAN president  had long failed.

He explained that on several occasions, the CAN leader had used the Directorate of State Services and other Christian leaders to get to him but to no avail.

Musa-Dikwa added that he was aware all entreaties from some men of God for him to see Oritsejafor for “settlement” was aimed at rubbishing him since he blew the lid over the N7bn bribery scandal.

He said,

“I have not seen Pastor Oritsejafor in the past one and half years. They are the ones that have been sending emissaries to me for settlement, but I have always refused to go.

“The wife(Oritsejafor’s) is lying. I have never seen Ayo’s wife in my life. They have used the DSS to force me to write statements. They are lying against their spirits and their God.

“Let them bring witness(proof) that I went to beg Ayo. Is it in Abuja or Warri?

“They have been sending men of God to me for settlement. The CAN’s North Central zone chairman, Yakubu Pam, even told me that I should go and meet Ayo and that he talked to him, but I refused.

“Many of them(christian leaders) have been calling me, asking to meet the CAN leader and settle and I said, ‘what for?’ In fact, they said I should not talk again and that they know that all I have been saying the true.

“Even they have called me, requesting that  I denounced that they collected money and that they are going to give me money but I refused.”

The Nigerian Pastors who lost out on March 28, 2015

Another set of the biggest political losers in Nigeria in 2015 are the Nigerian prophets of doom who missed out completely on the winner of the Nigerian presidential election with their lying prophecies and the popular pastors of Nigeria that enjoy political patronage from the government of the day.

These pastors were publicly accused of accepting a 7 billion Naira ($35 million) bribe through the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to campaign for the reelection of their pay master, President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria who lost his reelection. The power that be has now changed hands inside the Aso Rock villa and the services of these pastors may not be needed again by the new occupant of the Aso Rock villa for the next four years.

How “unholy acts’ by Igbo PDP leaders robbed South East of Senate President, House Speaker slots – APC leaders

The governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, on Thursday lamented the “unholy act” exhibited by political leaders in the South East zone during the National Assembly elections, saying it has now robbed the zone of the opportunity to produce either Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives in June.
ngige

All Senatorial and House of Representatives candidate of the All Progressives Congress lost their elections in the elections held March 28.

The 15 senatorial districts in the five states, namely Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo were picked by the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party.

With the victory of Muhammadu Buhari from the North and his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, from the South West, the Senate President or Speaker of the House slots would have ordinarily gone to the South East but for the outcome of the elections.

Speaking in Owerri, the Imo State capital at a rally organised by the South East APC to celebrate Mr. Buhari’s victory, Mr. Okorocha said the zone should have elected a ranking senator or member of the House of the Representatives on the platform of the party to occupy either of the positions if PDP leaders from the zone had not engineered the rigging of the National Assembly election held the same day with that of the presidency.

He specifically noted that a serving senator and former governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige or a former senator, Osita Izunaso, both of whom contested the election, would have been elected Senate President if they were not rigged out at the election.

He said, “The South East is entitled to either the Senate President or the Speaker of the Federal House. But as I speak to you now because of the unholy act of last Saturday they (Igbo leaders) have not been able to give us any ranking member of the Senate or ranking member of the Federal House.

“You cannot be a Senate President, you cannot be a Speaker unless you are somebody who has been there before. It is our plan that Osita Izunaso should go to the Senate, Ngige should go to Senate.

“Gentlemen, the truth is that one of them should have been Senate President of Nigeria. But our people, in their myopic thinking, in the smallness of their brain could not see the light and today this act of theirs has denied Ndigbo the Senate President, this act has denied Ndigbo the Speaker of the Federal House. I weep, I weep that this kind of thing can be allowed to happen here.”

Mr. Okorocha, who is a member of the APC, said political leaders in the North do not play the kind of politics being exhibited by South East leaders.

“This kind of thing could not happen in Kano, it could not happen in Sokoto,” he said.

“But here in Igbo land they use soldiers to kill their people. It is our political leaders who sponsored this unholy act and we shall hold them responsible for every blood dropped during this election.

“We know them and they know we know them. They can be having their children abroad and be killing the poor people here. We will resist it and we will say no. “

The governor alleged that the Igbo leaders that perpetrated the rigging plans wanted to allocate 1.3 million votes to Mr. Jonathan in Imo State “but for our resistance they could not do it”.

He stressed, “It is not true that anyone defeated Buhari in Imo State. He won this election in this state. The nonsense is over. We have the details of all that happened in INEC headquarters. It will be embarrassing if we show all that happened to the world.”

Speaking earlier, Mr. Ngige recounted how he was rigged out of the election in which he lost to a serving member of the House of Representatives, Uche Ekwunife, of the PDP.

He explained that one of his agents was kidnapped during the election and that the collation officers were not spared the ordeal.

He said although he lost the senatorial election, the emergence of Mr. Buhari as president-elect was a joy to him.

According to the former governor, “The only thing I want to assure you people is that you have lost nothing. General Buhari has won the election. APC will form the next national government. We are going to recover all these seats, all the allocation they gave to us. All the allocations they gave to us, they allocated to me 20 votes from Anambra Central and Buhari 17, 960 votes, for the whole of Anambra. Is it possible?

Mr. Izunaso, who is the national organising secretary of the APC, vowed to reclaim the mandate given to him by the people of Orlu Senatorial District but stolen by election riggers.

“We are not unmindful of that fact that what we produced in the South East was not a reflection of the votes of the people,” he said.

“I assure you that it is not going to take long before all those things will be corrected. Anambra results were rigged. For a man like Ngige to come third on the ladder, is this the correct result?

“In Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, results were rigged, Imo results were rigged. But I can assure you that is the end. As for my people in Orlu Senatorial Zone who voted for me the victory that you gave me on Saturday must remain our victory.

“I am not going to let any criminal to go away with the mandate you gave to me freely. Out of 12 LGAs in Orlu Zone I won in 12 LGAs and there were no elections in three zones.”

He also prayed for peace for the incoming administration of General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) “with optimism that Nigeria will witness peace and progress under his administration.”

The CAN President said, “Dear brothers and sisters, Christ died and rose once for all and for everyone; but the power of the resurrection, this passover from slavery to evil, to the freedom of goodness, must be accomplished in every age and in our nation.

According to him, the need for peace that President Goodluck Jonathan demonstrated by conceding defeat to Buhari in the recently held presidential elections should be the point of reference for all our political leaders in the coming governorship and state assemblies elections.

“Peace for Nigeria is what I bring to you in this Easter celebration; may unity and stability be restored permanently in Nigeria. I also pray for peace for the incoming administration led by retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari with optimism that Nigeria will witness peace and progress under his administration,

“May the risen Lord, the conqueror of sin and death, be a support to you all, especially to the weakest and neediest. Thank you for your support to our leaders and on behalf of my family I wish you a wonderful Easter celebrations,” Oritsejafor said.

Meanwhile, the CAN Lagos State Chairman, Alexander Bamgbola, has congratulated Christians on the Easter celebration. He said the season was a time for liberation and freedom for mankind.

In a statement on Thursday, Bamgbola, who used the opportunity to congratulate the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, said it was time for Nigerians to come together and work for the progress of the country.

While noting that the prevalent peace in the land is an act of God, he said, “Nigerians have every cause to thank God. He made it possible for us to have a peaceful election devoid of rancour and war. The atmosphere in the country has been peaceful. God has been good.”

I won’t condone looting of public treasury —President-elect Buhari

The President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, has assured Nigerians that he would not condone looting of their common patrimony. He also promised to handle state resources with utmost responsibility and honesty.

Buhari_acceptance

Buhari said this while receiving a delegation of the people of his home-state, Katsina, who came to congratulate him on his election as President, at his campaign office, in Abuja, on Saturday.

He expressed his regret that the citizens had been impoverished by 16-year maladministration by the Peoples Democratic Party despite that the country received more income in the period than at any other time in the country’s history.

The President-elect said savings from his war against corruption would be ploughed into education, with the objective of empowering the citizens. A statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Garba Shehu, quoted Buhari as saying,

“If you give education to a man or woman, you have empowered them to be productive. There is no better way to empowerment.”

Buhari equally expressed his commitment to multi-party democracy as the best system of government, while he appealed to all citizens to imbibe courage and perseverance. These virtues, he said, stood him in good stead in bringing victory to him after failing three times in the past presidential elections.

The leaders of the delegation included the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Katsina State, Mustapha Inuwa; a former Governor of Katsina, Saidu Barda; a leading Muslim cleric; a representative of federal legislators; and a representative of the traditional institutions in the state.

US Ambassador’s diplomatic gaffe (Miscalculation or Part of the Divide & rule Plan ?)

LAST Sunday’s visit of the United States Ambassador to Nigeria to the International Conference Centre, in Abuja, where the collation of results for the 2015 Presidential election was taking place, was a brazen breach of diplomatic protocol.

It was a visit that should be condemned for what it represents: an undue interference in a sensitive and important internal affair of this country.

James Entwistle, while at the ICC, was quoted as saying that the Permanent Voter Card employed in Nigeria’s 2015 elections, by the Independent National Electoral Commission, was of higher technological value than the one in use in his home state of Virginia in the US. “I think we need to come and study it so that we can use it in my country,” he said. Although seemingly well-intentioned and commendable on its face value, that statement, to say the least, was also patronising.

While it is sometimes permissible, and indeed acceptable, to prod a reluctant country into taking actions perceived to be beneficial to the country, there should be a time to draw the line, especially on matters that have to do with the internal affairs of a sovereign state. If there are international rules and conventions governing conduct among nation states, such should be respected and applied in all circumstances. Policy options, especially on the choice of a political, economic, social and cultural system, and the formulation of foreign policy, fall into the category of matters which each state is permitted, by the principle of State sovereignty, to decide freely. It will be unimaginable for the Nigerian ambassador in the US to behave in a similar manner during an election in his host country.

This brings to mind the ongoing spat between the White House and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, following the latter’s recent visit to the US, on the invitation of the Congress. The visit was termed to be too close to the last Israeli election, and would be taken for an endorsement of Netanyahu by the American government, thus conferring an undue advantage on him over other candidates. For this reason, the American President, Barack Obama, had refused to accord him the courtesy of an official welcome.

Although there is no written law in America that says the president should not welcome a visiting head of government heading into a reelection battle, yet, there is a tradition to that effect, which Obama was not ready to break with – not even for the sake of an Israeli prime minister. So, if the Americans could go to such length to uphold their own tradition and convention, then they should also be able to respect the sensibilities of other people.

The use or non-use of the PVC attracted a heated debate before the election and it should not be an issue for diplomatic comments. Yet, it is obvious that the ambassador was only exploiting the weak institutions in Nigeria and the failure of governance to treat the country in such a disrespectful manner. Over the years, Nigeria has endured bad governance that has effectively retarded her growth and development. The country has been described as one with abundance of potentialities, but which have failed to translate into tangible benefits. A look at all the indices of development has seen Nigeria languishing in the lowest rungs of the ladder, contending with failed states such as Somalia, Afghanistan and Yemen.

Corruption has emerged as the bane of the country. Regrettably, more than two years after some Nigerians made away with over N2 trillion in an oil subsidy scam, not one person has so far been jailed. These are some of the shortcomings that countries like the US exploit to dabble in the internal affairs of Nigeria. But it should not be so.

Not surprisingly, attempts by American “experts” to analyse events in Nigeria have almost always brought out a warped and stereotyped outcome that stands facts on their heads. Their inability, or deliberate refusal, to situate the Boko Haram insurgency as part of a global terrorist and jihadist movement typifies this.

For instance, John Campbell, a former US ambassador to Nigeria, has spent a great deal of efforts misinforming the world that Boko Haram is a product of marginalisation, poverty and lack of education, despite abundant evidence to the contrary. Claiming to be an expert on Nigeria, he recently said, “Boko Haram insurgency is a direct result of chronic poor governance by Nigeria’s federal and state governments, the political marginalisation of northeastern Nigeria, and the region’s accelerating impoverishment.” He is wrong.

This is not only disingenuous, but a deliberate twisting of facts. In the first place, poverty is a common feature in almost all parts of Nigeria. Second, Boko Haram, in pursuit of its nihilistic mission like every jihadist terrorist organisation, has never mentioned economic deprivation as a grouse. Besides, in the past few years, sons of prominent Nigerians, with privileged backgrounds, have come out to openly identify with global terrorist movements, which rubbishes outright, any claims of poverty as motivation. Was it marginalisation for instance, that pushed the well educated Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, son of a multimillionaire businessman, into attempting to bomb an American airliner on Christmas Day of 2009? Was it also poverty that made the son of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria to travel all the way to Syria to join forces with the Islamic State terrorists? It is also on record that Buji Foi, a commissioner in Borno State, resigned his appointment to take up leadership position in Boko Haram. That certainly does not look like an action that was driven by poverty.

The French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, was quoted as saying last month, “There are 3,000 Europeans in Iraq and Syria today. When you do a projection for the months to come, there could be 5,000 before summer and 10,000 before the end of the year.” Can Campbell in all honesty ascribe this to poverty and marginalisation? How come the actions of the three teenage schoolgirls that recently travelled from Britain to join ISIS were not attributed to poverty and marginalisation? Why should analyses of similar situations in different places produce different results?

False narratives such as Campbell’s explain why the US government does not consider Boko Haram terror as a security threat to Western countries. America’s position on this is summed up by the views expressed in January by James Marks, a retired major general and Executive Dean, College of Criminal Justice and Security at the University of Phoenix, who said, “The United States can do anything it needs to do to rid Nigeria of Boko Haram. It could be long term effort, but it can be done. The US has the capability, we have all the elements and power but it is not a priority.” This is regrettable.

President Jonathan's 2015 Easter message to the nation

Fellow citizens,

I greet you all, especially our Christian brothers and sisters,  as we celebrate Easter in commemoration of  the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

For Christians all over the world, the major lessons of Easter, which we celebrate this year in the midst of general elections in our nation, are to be found in the Messiah’s Divine love and glorious self-sacrifice for the redemption of mankind.

This year’s celebration of Easter is taking place at a period of very critical national choices and decisions, during which we must all be prepared and willing to make sacrifices for greater unity, peace, political stability and progress in our beloved country.

We must therefore seize the opportunity of the Easter holiday to reflect deeply on what more we need to do as a people, to ensure that the political process in which we are currently engaged is successfully concluded and that our beloved country, Nigeria continues to move towards a better future for all of its citizens.
gej

Happily, we have already successfully scaled the hurdle of the Presidential and National Assembly Elections.  I am quite hopeful that the Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections will also be conducted peacefully.

To the glory and pride of our fatherland, our collective actions since March 28 have assured the world that the democratic spirit is alive and well in our nation.

By the grace of God, our beloved nation, Nigeria is moving forward despite all challenges.

Let us all pray this Easter, that God Almighty who has brought us this far, will continue to bless our nation as we  march onward towards the fulfillment of our collective vision of a truly united, strong and prosperous nation.

I wish you all very happy Easter celebrations.
