Court Jails Man for N.2m Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes  Commission, EFCC, on  Thursday, April 28, 2016 secured the conviction of one Sabo Sani Labaran before Justice Abubakar Jauro of the Gombe State High Court sitting in Gombe on one amended count  charge  bordering on impersonation and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N242, 000.00 ( Two  Hundred and Forty- twoThousandNaira).

The convict, who is a member of a syndicate, had, in October, 2015, allegedly obtained the sum of N242,000.00 from one Alhaji Hussaini Mai-Magani, having promised to award him a contract for the supply of some hospital equipment.

However, the convict, whose Facebook profile bears the picture of the Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, allegedly diverted the money for his personal use.

The charge reads:  ‘‘That you, Sabo Sani Labaran, sometime in October, 2015 at Gombe, Gombe State within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did fraudulently induce one Alhaji Hussaini Mai-Magani to pay the sum of Two Hundred and Forty- two Thousand Naira (N242,000.00) only, under a disguise that you are the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, and that you will award the nominal complainant with a contract for the supply of hospital equipment which you never did, thereby committed an offence contrary to the provision  of Section 320(a) and (b) of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 322 of the same Law.’’

The convict pleaded guilty to the one-count amended charge.

In view of his plea, Justice Abubakar convicted and sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of N20, 000.00(Twenty Thousand Naira) fine.

The convict was also ordered to pay the sum of N242,000.00 as  restitution  to the victim.
