Aliko Dangote, Africa's Richest Man, Loses U.S.$7.8 Bn As Naira, Stocks Plunge



A few weeks ago, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, announced a nearly 10 per cent devaluation of the naira, Nigeria's currency, after admitting that a plunge in world oil prices and dwindling dollar reserves were making it difficult to defend the value of the currency. The naira is now trading at N187 to $1 officially, compared to N165 in November. In the parallel market, the naira traded at N218 for a dollar Monday. In dollar terms, the devaluation has knocked more than $40 billion off the value of Nigeria's economy.

Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man, is the biggest loser among Nigeria's richest people as the Naira's slump, coupled with falling stock prices, have erased more than $7.8 billion of his fortune since February, when FORBES locked in the values for its annual ranking of the world's billionaires. Dangote was worth $25 billion at the time; but at the close of market last Tuesday, his networth had dropped to $17.2 billion. More than half of the drop in his fortune has happened since early November. As of November 7, Dangote was worth $21.6 billion, $4.4 billion more than now.

Sad as Bayelsa buries burnt female politicians



Many shed tears in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, on Tuesday as the remains of eight female politicians burnt to death on February 14, were buried at the Gloryland Cemetery in Azikoro Village.

The female politicians, including wife of the Secretary to Bayelsa State Government, Elizabeth Oguru, were burnt to death in a multiple motor accident after visiting the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience.

The accident at Ahoada in Rivers State involved a Toyota Sienna car, an SUV and a bus with the inscription, Peoples Democratic Party Women Initiative.

At the cemetery, family members, friends, colleagues, top government functionaries and well wishers broke down in tears as pall bearers brought the caskets bearing the remains.

CAN received ₦7bn bribe, Borno pastor insists



Borno State-based pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, who accused the Christians Association of Nigeria of collecting N7bn bribe from President Goodluck Jonathan to campaign against the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate in the March 28 election, has insisted that the CAN collected the said amount.

Musa-Dikwa on Monday in Kaduna insisted that the Jonathan government gave CAN N7bn to campaign against the APC candidate, Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

He however said that neither Jonathan nor Buhari was fit to govern the country.

Obasanjo’s fake Twitter account blocked


Operator(s) of @SegunObasanjo, a controversial Twitter handle associated with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, may have to look elsewhere for another deceptive platform. The account has been deactivated from the social networking platform.
Investigation shows that the account, which was still active last weekend, was removed from Twitter on Tuesday.
The Twitter handle rode on the back of the recent political rift between Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan to gain prominence. It enjoyed regular visits by politicians and journalists, who saw it as a useful source of information.
Cashing in on the internal conflict in the Peoples Democratic Party, in which Obasanjo was a key factor, the operator (s) in the account attacked perceived enemies of the former President and responded to their remarks.
